The Practice is the method for writing a Host.
Pasquale D'Silva and master acting teacher Ed Hooks, author of Acting for Animators, developed it. Its roots lie in Walt Disney's The Illusion of Life.
- Write a Host the way an actor builds a role.
- Give it a full inner life: beliefs, fears, goals, and enthusiasms. That inner life drives its behaviour.
- Get that right and the Host stays itself whether it is animated, puppeteered, or running as software.
- Fill in The Host Sheet honestly and the voice follows.
- Skip the inner life and you get a costume.
